Unit: PATCHWORK
Glory be to God for dappled things Gerard Manley Hopkins Travelling Travelling we become absorbed in the other. Plunging into uncharted territories exposed and vulnerable like the hand of love exploring a new lover’s body and soul. Intermittently the backpack of desire is filled with ecstatic mementos and wider horizons. * Rosie In the Mall next to an Aboriginal Art Gallery he stretched out his hand. “How do you do? My name is Garth” and holding mine as if it was a lifeline he said: “Could you help Rosie to get home? Rosie is sick! A dollar or two will do”. She held onto him mutely heron-legged, alcohol-marred. O Rosie where is your home? Where have you been? I expected you to collect the entry fee to Uluru-Kata Tjuta but the hand that took the money was white. Fleeting tourists replenish themselves at your ancestral Edens. Dreamtime stories and your handprints fading on rock galleries. White dealers trade your art. O Rosie if my people had been terrorized and slaughtered if my parents were put in chains if my children were stolen if I had lost a star-lit home if my gaze had become bereft of sacred sites I too, would have taken to drink. Here, with my paltry alms, I make a wish. May you become like Kuniya the python woman, empower yourself through the ritual of the dance and rise to slash the rapacious Neo-Liru* men. Alice Springs, 1999 *Aboriginal mythology. * I Felt the Presence of God in the earth’s vast wilderness the ancient land invigorating my footsteps in swimming, enwrapped in a dome of blue haze as if I were in divine amnion in a flock of silver-eye flower-peckers darting in the hibiscus bush in a blue wren fluttering around my garden cocking its tail in a white-faced heron forking the mud in the canal in the potted cactus unfurling fistfuls of red flowers on its prickly arms in a greyish-mauve cloud sailing into sunset I felt the presence of God in the awe of timeless silence in Cathedra Gorge in Bungle Bungle* and the timeless silence was like God. *Purnululu National Park in East Kimberley, Western Australia * In this City In this city where advertisers weave their cobwebs tracking unrealized desires on the walls of a construction site appeared unexpectedly in red graffiti the ghost of Che Guevara. Che lives! I was startled. It was like stumbling upon a lost friend or seeing the first flowering jonquils in a heavy winter. Che lives! triggers the memory of street marches and songs people making the ultimate sacrifice so life could be like a clean running stream left to the moods of the weather. In this city Che lives! It’s written by an intense young hand the exclamation mark slightly tilted in the shape of a cherry. In this city where multinational corporations spread their electronic tentacles and the dream of social justice is fading away like the twentieth century Che lives! in the hearts and the minds of visionaries and the oppressed. * Unit: MEMORIES Let us not allow the dead to be killed Zbigniew Herbet The Seasons 1 Spring would emerge her veils powdered with the vapour of frost. Life surged outdoors, the mattocks slapped the sun, digging the earth the silver plough whistled turning over the chestnut soil, behind it my mother stooping sowing golden seeds of corn. The turtle-dove was anxiously building her nest in the wild pear tree. Vegetation unfurled its carpet and we acquired a slippery dip on the fat clover of the bank where we rolled shouting. The sheep chewed, staring. 3 On May Day we would gather the May a thin creeper with minute mauve flowers that climbs on fences. We made wreaths and hung them on the front door for good luck. We gathered chamomile spreading it on the verandas to be dried by the sun. My mother would often sing: I was deceived by the birds, the nightingales of spring they lied by saying that Death would not take me. * The Cheese Maker My mother worked the churn at the crack of dawn milk’s anguish, granular butter we were waiting like fledglings and scoffed down the slices of bread covered with the thick fresh cream sprinkled with sugar. At midday she was stirring the boiling cauldron and treated us to steaming ricotta. Kefalotyria stood out like full moons in the dark cellar feta cheese sealed in drums oil filtering in earthenware jars wine maturing in huge barrels. The conqueror came directed by the finger of hatred. The enraged Germans were seeking my father claiming our household a shelter of the guerrillas. “Partisans! Partisans!” they were shouting with matches in hand. Luckily, the magnanimity of the village saved our home. In the yard a German soldier an animal lover for sure was stroking our newborn kittens. * Survival When the swallows returned Spring would kick up her heels. Some of the hens would go clucking puffed up their feathers and took over the nest-egg creating commotion in the hencoop. My mother would prepare a basket as if it were a nuptial bed with layers of golden hay placing gingerly twelve eggs on top and the best brooding hen over them. When the chicks hatched the hen would strut the yard like a peacock its tail a stream of silken brood. By late summer my mother would tenderly hold a young chook while tying its feet explaining sadly the necessities of life and death as if she were administering some sacrificial rite apologizing for being its executioner as the sharp blade severed its head splattering blood. * Unit: LAYA* Everyone takes wood from a fallen tree. Proverb Departure The last day the final hours. Life soars in the endeavor to absorb the landscape the sunset on the mountains opposite the rustling of the leaves the sounds of birds and of the sheep herds the comforting words. The last supper weighs heavily mature wine fills the glasses. “Have a good journey”. Sip by sip grief is swallowed. Numb daybreak. The parting of the living cannot bear laments. Setting off for the unknown the fare on credit our identity a stamped number. Huddled in holds of dilapidated ships travelling in suspense bewildered by strange places. Herds of volunteer helots we arrive in concrete jungles. Without recommendations without welcome. Silenced by incoherent words speechless we are put to the yoke parts of machinery under the subjection of heartless foremen. The toil dries up the nerves maims the body. A dim cacophonous workplace. We are the generation of the Diaspora factory fodder. *Black sheep * The Machine I press the button, the needle runs, the stitch like a crazy train marks a myriad of journeys. But I sit still, speechless hands flying through the work my life a thin thread in the machine’s vortex. My body grows numb my mind grows numb the numbness becomes pain the world around, a cloud. My children hang on to me they seek a mother’s caresses but I am gnawed by the pressure of work to churn out my hundreds of pieces. The pain stitches my head it numbs my heart and my hands remain dumb to my children’s call. And they, rejected press with spite the magic button consoling themselves with the screen’s contrived wonders. The pain now becomes like a nail wedged in my innards and my husband’s stern glance like a needle pierces my heart. The machine stops. Its roar pursues my mind. Dizziness fogs my steps and the yellow-white tablet seems like holy bread… * Broken line for my father In your seventy-ninth year you silenced the gramophone with a kick dancing to your own singing: On the artichoke’s flower I’ll recline and slumber. You sprang from the line of the fairies the midwife’s last-born with brothers lost in distant lands. You settled in the small village to make good wedded dawn’s diligent daughter and together you ploughed the earth planted vineyards and children but times were hard. In ’49 you were sentenced to the underworld exiled to the devil’s island and from Anapli you sent us songs. You returned grey-haired charged with bitterness. Spitting in the face of unrelenting fate you braced yourself to start life anew but the dragon took your children. Now your sleep is heavy under the shadow of the marble slab. When autumn sheds its gold on earth the fields long for you, ploughman they miss your ploughing. When buds burst forth in spring the vineyards yearn for you, vine-grower they miss your pruning. When the sun scorches its locks the gardens hanker for you, gardener to quench their thirst. When festive days return the fairs clamour for you, dancer, singer they miss your manly valour. * The Laughing Boy for Theodore Bourgiotis My old friend your young image glows in my memory a laughing fair boy running behind us urging on and helping to build the ephemeral bridge over the flooding Meliena and often startling us with amazing hidey-holes in our hide-and-seek games. We were growing up in the shadow of war. Death prowling our playgrounds struck your home three times opening the deep black pits of widowhood and orphanhood. Vengeance, a double-edged knife siblings’ blood saturating the earth. We clung on to the crevices of light until we were dispersed by necessity. You became a lover of science a visionary for justice healing wounds and redeeming hatreds with the abundance of your love. You even reached the antipodes to soothe the pain of separation. “Fteroty* remember how you saved me from the fire. See, I still have the scar”. Memory is stirred we used to nurse you by the fire place your sister and I best friends then, before we got to know the terror of war. Your unexpected visit comforted us childhood’s friendship could not be in vain in old age we will enjoy our songs together. Alas, for you my good, dear friend the black-clad rider was saddling his black horse. October 2002 *Nickname meaning ‘the one with wings’. |
